She Said 'Let's Chat a Bit More First.' Six Replies, Rewritten.
It's a yellow light, not a red one. How you answer decides whether the date happens next week or never.
You did the hard part. The thread was good, you picked your moment, you asked. And she came back with:
haha I'd like that, but let's chat a bit more first?
That's not a no. It's not even a soft no. It's a woman who has met strangers from an app before and would like slightly more evidence that you're a normal person before she gives up an evening. Fair enough.
The problem is what happens next. Most men either deflate or overcorrect, and both turn "a bit more" into forever. Here are the six replies that do the damage, and what to send instead.
1. The wounded retreat
Weak:
oh no worries, sorry if that was too soon
Strong:
fair, I've been told I move fast. you get three more questions to vet me. use them wisely
Why: Apologising tells her the ask was a mistake, which makes it awkward to bring back later. The rewrite accepts her terms in good humour and turns "chat more" into a small game she can play right now.
2. The negotiation
Weak:
how much more do you need? just one drink, it's really low pressure
Strong:
deal. but I'm keeping the drink idea warm, it's a good idea and I refuse to let it go to waste
Why: Arguing with her comfort level is the fastest way to confirm she was right to be careful. You don't need her to agree today. You need to signal that the offer stands, lightly, and then drop it.
3. The interview
Weak:
sure! so what do you do for fun? where did you grow up? any siblings?
Strong:
ok, chatting more. important question first: what's a hill you'd genuinely die on
Why: "Chat more" isn't a request for a questionnaire. She wants to know what talking to you feels like. One good question with a bit of personality does more than five safe ones, and it's the same reason you should stop interviewing her in general.
4. The disappearing act
Weak: saying nothing for two days because you feel a bit rejected.
Strong: reply within your normal rhythm, with something that has nothing to do with the date:
unrelated, but I just saw a man walking a cat on a lead and I need you to know the cat was in charge
Why: If the chat goes quieter after she asks for more chat, you've answered her question for her: you were only here for the date. Keeping your usual energy is the proof she asked for.
5. The endless pen pal
Weak: two more weeks of pleasant messages and no second ask, because you're scared of hearing "let's chat more" again.
Strong, around four to seven good exchanges later, once she's laughing and asking you things back:
ok I think I've passed the vetting. Thursday, the little wine bar on Grant St, 7ish?
Why: "A bit more" has a shelf life. If you never come back to it, she'll assume you lost interest, and the chat will drift into the slow fade. Ask again, more specifically than the first time. Day, place, time. Turning a vague plan into a real one matters double on the second attempt.
6. The video-call dodge
Weak, when she suggests a quick call first:
haha I'm not really a phone person
Strong:
sure, 10 minutes tomorrow evening? fair warning, my kitchen is mid-renovation and will be judged
Why: Sometimes "chat more" really means "I'd like to hear your voice before meeting." That's a shortcut, not an obstacle. Say yes, keep it short, and keep it light. There's a full playbook for when she wants to FaceTime first.
When she asks a second time
If you ask again a week later and get another "let's chat more," it's worth reading the rest of the thread honestly. Is she asking you questions? Are her replies getting longer or shorter? If she's engaged, give it one more week. If she's sending one-liners and you're doing all the work, the slow fade has already started and a third ask won't change it. Her reply timing will usually tell you which one you're in.
If you're stuck on the reply itself, screenshot the chat into hintder and pick a tone; it drafts a few options from what's actually in the thread, and you choose one and send it yourself. The first three are free.
The short version: take the yellow light with a grin, keep your normal energy, and ask again in about a week with a real day and a real place.
