You Always Text First. That's Not the Problem Yet.

Scroll your thread: every conversation starts with your message. Here's the test that tells you what her side of it actually is.

5 min

Scroll up your thread and look only at where each day starts. If every one of them opens with a message from you, you've probably already decided what that means, and you've probably decided wrong — in one direction or the other.

Because there are two completely different women who produce that exact same thread, and from the inside they look identical.

The two people who text like this

The first one is interested and simply doesn't initiate. Not with you, not with her friends, not with anyone. Her phone is a thing she answers, not a thing she uses. She'll reply to you in four minutes with three sentences and a question, every time, and it will genuinely not occur to her that opening the thread herself was an option.

The second one is being polite. She answers because a message arrived and ignoring it feels rude, and she will keep answering — briefly, agreeably, forever — without ever wanting anything from the conversation.

You cannot tell these apart by staring at who sent the first message. You can only tell them apart by what happens in a gap. So make one.

The test: end clean, then leave three days alone

Here's the part most men get wrong. They notice the asymmetry, feel it, and go silent at her — a sulk disguised as an experiment. She feels the temperature drop, reads it as him losing interest, and reacts accordingly. That doesn't test anything; it just breaks the thread and blames her for it.

Do it the other way. End your next exchange while it's still good, warmly, with a clear full stop and nothing outstanding for her to answer:

right, I'm out — early meeting I've been pretending isn't happening. this was a good one, talk soon

Nothing there is cold. There's also nothing there that requires a reply, which is the point: you've handed the thread back to her, with the last thing in the box being pleasant rather than pointed. Then don't open it for three days. Not seven, not "until she cracks" — three. Long enough to be a real gap, short enough that the thread is still warm when you come back.

Reading the three outcomes

She texts first inside those three days. That's your answer. She was person one — interested, just not an initiator — and now you know the silence was a habit, not a verdict. Stop auditing the thread and ask her out this week. Threads that have been going long enough for you to count the openings are threads that are overdue for a plan.

Silence, but she's warm when you come back. You reopen, she replies fast, it's good again. This is the most common result and the most misread. She's interested and passive, and a passive thread never converts on its own — it just gets older until one of you stops. So don't resume the pen-pal phase. Use the re-entry to make a plan, not conversation.

that ramen place you threatened me with — Thursday or Saturday?

Silence, and the reopen gets a flat reply. One line, no question, no warmth. That's person two, and it's finished. Nothing was lost, because there was nothing there; a polite thread was never going to become a date. Close the tab and put the energy into a match that answers like it wants to.

What actually matters more than who opens

Reply quality is the real signal, and it's the one to read while you're waiting. Length relative to yours, whether she asks anything back, whether she volunteers specifics you didn't ask for — those tell you more in one message than a month of tracking who texted first. Timing alone is the noisiest signal of all, and usually means less than men think.

One practical note for the re-entry text, since a three-day gap is exactly when the blank box gets intimidating: screenshot the thread and let hintder read it. It'll draft a few ways back in — in the tone you pick — and you send the one that sounds like you. It doesn't message her or manage the conversation; it just stops you sending "hey stranger" at 11pm. First three are free.

Who texts first is a habit. Whether she's coming out on Thursday is the question — and only one of those is worth three days of your attention.

Stop reading. try it on a real profile.
