She Asked 'Why Are You Single?' It's Not a Trap. Mostly.

Four things guys believe about the question, and what to send when it lands in your chat.

so why are you single?

Five words, and suddenly you're drafting a statement for the press. Do you mention the three-year thing? Do you joke? Do you ask her the same question back before she notices you haven't answered?

Relax. Most of the time this question is curiosity with a little flirt in it: you seem fine, so what's the catch? The trouble comes from what guys believe about it. Here are four of those beliefs, and what to do instead.

Myth 1: She's hunting for a red flag

Reality: she's checking how you handle a slightly awkward question. That's the test, not your relationship history.

If she really wanted to screen you for red flags, she'd ask something sharper. "Why are you single" is soft. It's what people ask when the chat is going well and they want to push it a step closer to personal. The guy who gets tense and over-explains fails the test. The guy who answers in one easy line passes, whatever the actual reason is.

So answer it the way you'd answer it at a bar: briefly, without a defence attached.

honestly? I moved here last year and spent most of it learning which bars are bad. I'm now an expert. it hasn't helped

Myth 2: Honest means the full history

Reality: honest means true. It doesn't mean complete.

You don't owe a match on day two a timeline of your last relationship. "I got out of something long last year, and I'm glad I did" is honest. Four paragraphs about who cheated and who kept the dog is honest too, but now she's reading about another woman during what was supposed to be a flirt.

The same rule works in both directions. If she brings up her ex, you let it be a sentence, not a topic. Do her the same favour.

got out of a long one about a year ago. good call, wrong timing for both of us. I'm much better company now, or so I'm told

One clause of fact, one clause of attitude, and you're done.

Myth 3: A joke lets you skip it

Reality: a joke is great, but a joke with no answer inside it reads as a dodge.

These are the lines guys think are clever:

I'm too picky

waiting for you obviously

that's classified

The first one sounds like a complaint about every woman you've met. The second is a line she's heard before, and it skips her question. The third asks her to chase you for an answer, and on day two she won't bother.

Keep the humour, but put something real in it. The joke goes on top of a true answer, not in place of one.

mostly because I keep picking dates by the quality of the fries. it's a flawed system. the fries have been excellent

That's funny, it's a little self-aware, and it's a real-ish answer about how you date. She can tease you about the fries, and now you have a thread. It's the same idea as answering her red-flag question with something specific, not "I care too much."

Myth 4: You have to throw it back at her

Reality: "you?" is fine. "What about you, why are YOU single?" can sound like a counter-attack.

The reflex is to return the question as soon as you've answered it, so she's on the spot too. But she asked it from a good place. If you fire it back word for word, it can sound as though you felt accused. A softer return works better, or none at all if your answer already gave her something to grab.

anyway, that's my excuse. I'm more interested in how someone with a photo like number three hasn't been snapped up

Or move the question somewhere useful. If you've had a good few messages, "why are you single" is a strong signal that she's thinking past the app. You can use that:

the real answer is I haven't met anyone worth leaving the house for in a while. you're making a decent case though. drinks thursday?

That line answers her, flirts, and asks her out in one message. If she's the one asking personal questions, the timing is usually right — the signals are in when to ask her out.

What a good answer looks like

Every strong reply to this question has the same shape:

  1. One true sentence about your situation. No names, no dates.
  2. One small thing that shows you're fine with it: a joke, a shrug, a bit of self-awareness.
  3. A hook back to her or to a plan.

If you've typed something and it feels too heavy or too cute, hintder can help. Screenshot the chat, choose a tone, and it drafts a few replies you can choose from and send yourself. The first three hints are free.

She didn't ask for your history. She asked whether you're easy to be around. Answer that.
