She Doesn't Drink. Your 'Let's Grab Drinks' Just Died.
She just removed your only date idea. Don't ask her why. Change the plan in the same message and keep the evening.
drinks thursday?
I actually don't drink haha
It's the most common first date invite on any app, and you've just found out it won't work here. For about ten seconds you have no plan and a strong urge to ask a question you shouldn't.
This comes up in a few different versions, and each one needs a slightly different reply. In all of them, the risk isn't the bar. It's what you say in the next message.
She says: "I actually don't drink haha"
How to read it: this isn't a no. She answered the part of your invite that doesn't work and left the rest open. She has probably had this exact conversation many times, and some of those men made it weird. She's waiting to see which kind you are.
The move: drop the drinks, keep the day, and name a new plan in the same message. Here's what she usually gets instead:
oh really? why not?
not even wine??
no worries, you can just get a soda at the bar
The first one asks for a medical or personal history from someone you've never met. Maybe she just hates the taste. Maybe she's four years sober. Either way, she'll tell you when she wants to. The second one sounds like you're negotiating. The third keeps your plan and puts her in a place she may be trying to avoid.
Send this:
good, that saves me pretending I know about wine. there's a late dessert place on Hill with a stupid amount of cake. thursday at 8?
One light clause, then the plan. You didn't ask a single question about it, and that's what she'll notice. If you get stuck on the day and place, the same formula from what did you have in mind still works: a thing, a day, a reason.
Her profile says "Sober" or lists drinking as "No"
How to read it: you have the information before you've typed anything, which makes this the easy version. If it's a line she wrote herself ("three years sober and very annoying about it"), she chose to put it there. If it's only the field in the profile, it's a fact and not a topic.
The move: don't open on it. "Respect for being sober" sounds like a pat on the head from a stranger. Open on anything else, using her prompts or photos. Then, when it's time to ask, make your first invite one that was never about alcohol.
I know a place that does ramen until midnight and has one table that wobbles. saturday, and we fight for the good table
If she wrote the line herself and made a joke of it, you can join in. Tease the "very annoying," not the sobriety:
how annoying are we talking. do you bring up your sleep score unprompted
And if she talks about it seriously later, one sentence of respect is enough. Listen to whatever she says next. Don't turn it into a story about your uncle.
She says: "I'm not drinking at the moment"
How to read it: this one's temporary. It could be a dry month, antibiotics, marathon training or a bad Saturday she's still paying for. The wording leaves the reason open, and sometimes she's half inviting you to ask.
The move: a small tease is fine here, but only if the chat already has some play in it, and it should still come with a plan. If she doesn't offer the reason after that, leave it.
so this is a phase, like my sourdough. fine. tacos thursday, and I'll have whatever you're having
Don't say "we'll get you a real drink when it's over." You've got no idea why she stopped, and you might be wrong in a way you can't take back.
She asks: "wait, do you drink?"
How to read it: it's a real question. For some women it's small talk, and for others it's a dealbreaker check. You can't tell which from one line, so answer it straight.
The move: tell the truth, in proportion. Don't claim you've been meaning to quit, and don't suddenly discover you hate beer. She'll find out on date two, and the lie will be a bigger problem than the beer.
I do, a beer with dinner most weekends. it's not a big part of my life, and I won't miss it on thursday
If it is a big part of your life, say that too. If your Saturdays are built around pubs and hers can't be, it's better for you both to find out now than over a very long plate of cake.
Replace the evening, not just the drink
Here's where most men get the second half wrong. They hear "no bar" and offer coffee at 2pm, and it feels like a job interview with better muffins.
A bar does three jobs. It gives you an evening, a place to sit close together, and an easy way to leave after an hour. Your replacement needs all three, and these usually fit:
- Dessert or a late coffee place at 8pm. It's the same hour and the same low lighting, with more sugar.
- A counter with short food. Tacos, ramen, dumplings. You sit side by side and it ends when the food does.
- A walk with a destination. Night market, the good ice cream, a viewpoint. "A walk" alone is too vague to say yes to.
- Something with a small game in it. Bowling, mini golf, a bad arcade. It's better than a bar when you're nervous, because your hands have a job and you have a reason to tease each other.
If she can't make your first suggestion, remember that she turned down the day, not the date. Offer another one.
Once you're there, don't make it a topic. If you want a beer, order one without a speech and without checking that it's okay. Don't say "you sure?" when she orders a soda. Don't announce to the waiter that she doesn't drink. Those small moments tell her more about you than any text you sent.
If you freeze at that "I don't drink haha," hintder reads a screenshot of the chat and drafts a few replies in the tone you pick. You choose one and send it yourself, and your first three are free.
She only ruled out the alcohol. So don't ask why. Name a better plan before she has to wonder if you still have one.
